PLACES TO VISIT IN THE SOUTH HAMS There are a multitude of interesting and beautiful places to visit in our immediate area and, also, a little further afield. We maintain a good supply of tourism brochures in our entrance hall, describing in detail many interesting places. The following are just a few examples of places worth visiting. Glorious Devon Beaches:- Bantham - Only a few minutes' drive and great for sand castles or sunbathing & swimming. Bigbury - Sunbathing, swimming, sand castles or walk across to Burgh Island at low tide and explore there. Good walking. Slapton Sands - Good facilities and great for sunbathing & swimming or walking around the freshwater lake, Slapton Ley Blackpool Sands - Good facilities and good sunbathing & swimming - or explore the secret garden. Historical Towns & Villages:- Kingsbridge - With it's estuary, regular markets and owner-run shops. Or take a boat ride to Salcombe from here. Dartmouth - Ancient naval town. Take boat trips upstream to Totnes or round the coast. Visit the Castle & Bayards Fort. Salcombe - Old fishing town, now a centre for those interested in boating. Visit the chocolate factory ! Totnes - With it's own castle and ancient walled Norman town. Some lovely owner-run shops here. Brixham - Ancient fishing village with it's busy harbour. Fishing trips or go aboard "The Golden Hind" in the harbour. Cockington - Quaint old Devon village - thatched buildings, the old smithy, horse-drawn rides and much more. Some Great Places for The Kids:- Woodlands Leisure Park - If you've been to Alton Towers, then you need to visit Woodlands as well ! Pennywell Farm - Children can feed and handle the animals. Well supervised fun. Paignton Zoo - A very open zoo, with not many cages or bars. Great day out for the kids. Some Good Rides:- Steam Trains - The Paignton & Dartmouth Railway and The South Devon Railway are both close by. The Round Robin - A scenic day out including rides on a steam train, a vintage bus, a ferry and a riverboat. Scenic Walks:- Devon Coastal Path - This stretches all around the dramatic and beautiful Devon coast. Inland Walks - Borrow one of our guide books and explore the countryside on foot. |
